Since his father was in the US Army, Derwin has experienced many different cultures and people from a very early age. He also grew up in an environment surrounded by art. His father enjoyed photography, his mother made Japanese dolls, and his siblings dabbled in acrylic painting. His sister picked up her first camera when Derwin was about 13 years old and her hobby influenced him to start photographing the world around him. At that age, before he knew anything about proper photographic technique, Derwin would experiment with different types of shots, angles, etc.

Derwin continued with his passion in college and received a degree in Art from the University of Hawaii with classes in graphic design and photography. He did not limit his artistic focus to just photography. He also developed a love for airbrushing. And to this day, he still has his
first airbrush and continues to paint fine art portraits. He uses his artistic training from school in his post-production work.

Derwin has done many diverse activities in his life. His previous work history includes Emergency Medical Technician-Ambulance and Portfolio Manager. These experiences have helped Derwin to live life fully and become the photographer he is today. He believes that through his life challenges, exposures, and influences as he was growing up, God has been molding him to appreciate and capture those special momentary gifts in the world around him.

Derwin is touched that his work has received many accolades from clients and other professional photographers. In a recent WPPI print competition with over 1,000 entries from all over the world, Derwin received special honors and won an Accolade of Excellence award, designed to recognize outstanding photographers.

Derwin is happily married to his wonderful wife, Tina, who assists him on occasions when she is not busy with her private practice. They live on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. He thanks Tina for her support and encouragement. The name of the company, Ki’i Honu Images (key-ee ho-new), in Hawaiian, is named after Tina’s favorite sea animal, the sea turtle.

But most of all, Derwin thanks Jesus for being his Lord and Savior. And it is by His grace that Derwin is allowed to do what he does, capturing God’s beautiful momentary gifts with his cameras.
